Emerging Writers - Elementary School

Our newest Emerging Writers Institute offering is tailored specifically for our younger writers: rising 5th and 6th grade students who are interested in creative writing. This camp is offered IN-PERSON or ONLINE!

Each day, writers will attend seminars and writing workshops designed to introduce the basics of fiction writing and will practice their new skills in a fun, collaborative environment. Throughout the week, students will also have dedicated writing time and mini-workshops as they craft their very own “fractured fairy tale,” which will be presented in a final story slam at the end of the week.

Curriculum

Writers in this course will improve their creative writing skills as they complete writing exercises and games focused on building creativity and finding inspiration from unexpected places. In addition to more traditional lessons about characterization and plot arc, they will write captions for comic strips, create paragraphs from randomized words and use other media as a launching point for interesting stories!

Each day, students will make progress on their own writing piece, reading mentor texts, finding new and innovate ways to fracture their fairytale and giving and receiving feedback on their work with peers. In addition, our expert instructors will provide lots of one on one feedback and guidance to polish their pieces and prepare them for publication in our class fairytale storybook.
For maximum options in summer 2022, this program will be offered in-person at West coast locations, as well as online!

Some of our recent staff members for this program include:

Elizabeth Bull, MFA - Camp Director

Elizabeth Bull is a writer and filmmaker. Her writing has been published in various journals, including the Los Angeles Review of Books, H.O.W. Elizabeth has also co-produced two feature films and a television series for Fuse.

Elizabeth received her Bachelor’s degree from the School of Theater, Film, and Television at the University of California Los Angeles. She also holds a Master in Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing (Fiction) from The New School in New York City.  In addition, she has studied directing at the Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design, and Technology in Dublin, Ireland on a Rotary International Fellowship.  She has taught writing at the University of Zadar in Croatia on a Fulbright Fellowship.  Elizabeth has been with Education Unlimited since 2010.

Brianna Broady, MFA - Instructor

Brianna Broady has worked with Education Unlimited for 8 years. When she's not working with EU, she's a full-time professor in Speech Communication at Pasadena City College as well as a coach of their Speech and Debate Team. When she was in the 8th grade, Brianna published her first book, "So You Want To Be A Swimmer." She had fallen in love with the sport of swimming at the age of 5 and wanted to share this love with others as well as give them a guide to enter into the world of competitive swimming. After that, she published a few childrens' books with her grandmother that turned into a series exploring the adventures of a mischievous cat called, "Missy the Kitty." She is so excited to be working with students in our EWI Camp because writing is such a beautiful exercise of self-expression and she looks forward to guiding students through that process. She'll see you all at camp!

Emily Mercurio, MFA - Instructor
