Bethany Carlson, MDiv, MFA — Instructor

Bethany Carlson is an adjunct English professor based in New Haven, Connecticut.  She holds two graduate degrees, a Master’s in Divinity from Yale University and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Indiana University.  Through her graduate school years she has studied liturgy, theology, creative arts and poetry. She has taught literature, technical writing, and composition at the college level and spent summer of 2017 teaching a poetry workshop for high school students at Wesleyan University through their Center for Creative Youth program.

Bethany enjoys working with students because she finds them to be intensely creative people, and writing provides them with freedom of expression as well as meaningful validation to share what's important in their lives. She strongly believes that students should be at the center of their own learning; meaning that student engagement begins with encouraging them to claim ownership of the learning process. Her teaching style appeals to different styles of learning and she integrates group work and hands-on activities while using technology, when possible, to enhance the learning experience.

When she is not teaching or lesson planning, Bethany loves being active--exploring new hiking trails and parks, running, and swimming.
